production method:

Chloromethylation of p-hydroxyacetophenone with formaldehyde and concentrated hydrochloric acid to produce 3-chloromethyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone, which is then esterified with acetic anhydride to obtain 3-hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone. Diacetate can be obtained by brominating the latter with bromine.
